This season can be so stressful. Work is intense, there are so many channels to watch and evaluate, and so much competition.
As Beth Kanter says, “The sad truth is the passion that social change activists…have for their work is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it helps them to keep going in face of difficult challenges. On the other hand, it prevents them from refueling or noticing that they are experiencing the early warning signs of burnout.” Plus there’s the fact that working online and staring at a screen all day can kind of fry your brain.
I found some nice pieces on self-care for digital non-profit types and thought they might be useful to you:
- Níall Ó’Murchú of Concern has been writing on ‘digital mindfulness’ and has some interesting posts about ways to look after yourself while doing stress-inducing digital work. I particularly like hisDigital Mindfulness Manifesto.
- Beth Kanter, who I quoted above, is probably my favourite digital non profit writer. She has a great post on her blog with advice from health and social justice expert Aisha Moore, on how to take care of yourself and avoid burnout.
- If the stress is coming from people around you, life coach Sinead Hardiman has some useful advice on dealing with difficult colleagues
