Article: How Snapchat Built a Business by Confusing ‘Olds’

The headline of this article on Snapchat from Bloomberg Businessweek really resonated with me.  I’m not exactly a Luddite – I’ve coded websites! – but I am still baffled by Snapchat.  If, like a lot of people in the non-profit sector, you’re aware that it’s an insanely fast-growing and popular platform, but don’t have the slightest idea how or why you might use it, this article is a really useful start.  It explains how the platform is used (and confirms what we all suspected about it being deliberately user-unfriendly).  It also runs through how it’s currently making money and profiles some of the brands that are using it.

We always advise against spreading yourself too thinly across too many social networks at Digital Charity Lab, but if your core audience is young, it’s worth at least doing a bit of research on Snapchat. This useful piece by Ross McCulloch on the JustGiving blog highlights some charities that are using Snapchat well. As ever though, make sure you have clear goals before you start!
